Car manufacturing in Mexico could migrate to the USA

The industry expert Stefan Hecht from the consultancy Advyce & Company already has more concrete thoughts. He expects that the manufacturers will relocate at least part of the production from Mexico to the USA, where VW, BMW, and Mercedes also operate plants. The three manufacturers did not initially comment on this. The VW spokesperson also initially said nothing about VW's plans for a new battery cell factory in Ontario, Canada. However, the factory is intended to supply, among other things, the group's electric car plants in the USA.

The bill for the tariff war will be paid by the US consumer

Foreign trade expert Jandura sees the people in the USA as the losers of their president's tariff policy. Trump's decision will come at a high cost to them because tariffs always have bilateral effects. Countermeasures by the affected countries would exacerbate a trade conflict between nations, he warned. The losers are always the end consumers, who feel the price increases at the checkout. Trump shortly thereafter defended the tariffs against criticism that they affect his own citizens. However, he claimed the step would make America great again. Trump believes that this will be worth the price to pay if it comes to this. Ultimately, who bears the brunt of the tariffs also depends on the supply contracts between buyer and seller. Typically, it is the importers who pass higher costs on to consumers. For example, if cars in the USA depend on supplies from Mexico and Canada and tariffs are imposed on these parts, the cars automatically become more expensive.

The countries plagued by US tariffs are defending themselves

On the same night that Trump announced the tariffs, Canada, Mexico, and China announced countermeasures. Canada plans to impose retaliatory tariffs of 25 percent on US goods starting February 4th, among other things. Mexico and China also announced corresponding countermeasures. Additionally, China intends to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO). Whether the country will be successful is uncertain. This is because the 166 WTO member countries have committed to fair trade and the reduction of trade barriers such as tariffs. Tariffs can only be increased beyond the promised level upon joining under certain conditions. One argument could be that otherwise national security is at risk.
