Tesla plans to bring its Semi electric semi-truck to Europe next year. Deliveries of the first vehicles to European customers are scheduled to begin in 2027.

Further details regarding the market launch in Europe are expected to be announced in the coming months.

According to reports, the standard model will be the first to debut in Europe. It has a range of about 550 kilometers (342 miles) on a single battery charge. At fast-charging stations, the electric truck is expected to be able to recharge up to 60 percent of its range within 30 minutes.

The vehicle is designed for a total towing capacity of 40 metric tons. By way of comparison, Tesla states that the version with the larger battery has an estimated range of just over 800 kilometers (497 miles) in the U.S.

Tesla Semi to Arrive Years Later

The semi-truck was unveiled back in 2017 and, according to announcements at the time, was originally scheduled to go into production in 2019. However, Tesla postponed the launch several times, citing, among other reasons, that batteries were needed more urgently for cars like the best-selling Model 3.

Mass production finally began in April of this year in the U.S. state of Nevada. In the United States, the first Tesla trucks were delivered to customers such as the beverage and snack company PepsiCo.

In Europe, the Tesla truck will compete against rival products from European manufacturers such as Daimler Truck, MAN, Scania, Volvo, Iveco, and Renault. The automaker, led by tech billionaire Elon Musk, had already exhibited the Semi at the IAA two years ago. The commercial vehicle trade show officially opens today and runs through Sunday.
