The battery is one of the most valuable and expensive components of an eBike—and thus attracts the attention of thieves. Bosch eBike Systems now wants to make life difficult for thieves and has introduced an intelligent security feature called Battery Lock at this year's CES

Removable batteries like PowerTube and PowerPack are mechanically secured with a lock. With Battery Lock, Bosch aims to enhance this protection digitally, as announced by the supplier at CES 2025 in Las Vegas. How does this digital protection work? Once Battery Lock is activated in the eBike Flow App, the battery automatically locks when the eBike is turned off. If a locked battery is inserted into another eBike with the smart system, it automatically deactivates its motor assistance, making the entire eBike useless to the thief. This also renders the resale of the battery pointless, so that theft should not be profitable.

Manage digital keys flexibly

For Battery Lock, multiple digital keys can be used simultaneously: the smartphone with the eBike Flow App, as well as Kiox 300 or Kiox 500. The eBike Flow App allows users to manage these digital keys flexibly. Battery Lock can also be turned off if you want to share the battery with friends or family. The new security feature is also compatible with all batteries or battery combinations in the smart system and works with DualBatteries as well as the Range Extender PowerMore 250.

Available from this summer

With Battery Lock, the Stuttgart-based company complements its existing portfolio of digital security solutions and aims to provide greater theft protection. In the already available eBike Lock function, the smartphone and the Kiox 300 and Kiox 500 displays serve as digital keys to activate motor assistance. The eBike Alarm function informs the user of the eBike's location and triggers an alert in case of suspicious movements. If the eBike is stolen, they receive a push notification on the smartphone, and location tracking starts. The theft report summarizes all important data about the eBike and the incident in the event of theft, so this can be handed over to the police, including a live tracking link. The eBike Pass serves as a digital vehicle registration.

The new security feature can be installed over-the-air, as usual, on any Bosch eBike with the smart system via the eBike Flow app and will be available from summer 2025 with the paid Flow+ subscription. (se)
