In 1964, chassis number 00009/54 was pledged as a gift to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum and was officially handed over on Sunday, May 30, 1965. For nearly six decades, the W 196 R was meticulously cared for and maintained by the IMS Museum. It was occasionally displayed at significant events, such as the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance in 1996, the Canadian International Auto Show in 2003, and the grand reopening of the newly redesigned Petersen Automotive Museum in December 2015.
