BMW has developed new hydrogen tanks for its hydrogen SUV iX5 Hydrogen. The arrangement and size of the tanks should enable ranges of up to 750 kilometers (approx. 466 mi). The installation space is identical to that of the 6th generation high-voltage battery.

The manufacturer can thus build models with fuel cell drive on the same production line as models with other types of drive. BMW Head of Development Joachim Post speaks of "installation space Tetris". The 700-bar hydrogen pressure tanks are also integrated into the vehicle structure - and mechanically protected.

The Hydrogen Refueling System of the iX5

The new flat tank system consists of seven interconnected and parallel-connected high-pressure tanks made of carbon fiber-reinforced composite material. These are integrated into a robust metal frame. Instead of individual tanks, several composite chambers form a closed unit. This is controlled by a central main valve.

BMW has applied for several patents for the tank system. In total, the tanks can hold at least seven kilograms of hydrogen. It takes around five minutes to fill up once. Based on the flexible architecture, the new X5 can be available with five drive variants within the same model series, according to BMW: battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, with petrol or diesel engines, and with hydrogen fuel cell drive. BMW plans to build the ix5 Hydrogen from 2028.
