AI maintenance is generally interesting for automation

Lenze is currently integrating the AI maintenance assistant into the warehouse logistics of the Mechatronic Competence Campus in Extertal, as it has been revealed. This allows the company to collect training data on disruptions, failures, and wear, continuously optimizing the "predictive maintenance" solution. According to Lenze, they also plan to integrate the maintenance assistant into their software products as a standard feature to make it available for many applications in the automation industry. The flexibility of the system makes its transfer to other drive technology applications quite conceivable.

Predictive maintenance for little money

Although predictive maintenance has great potential, many companies find it difficult to decide on an investment because the effort is often high and the benefits are hard to quantify in advance. Therefore, Fraunhofer IEM is also developing smart maintenance planning that companies can implement with minimal effort and cost. This is done using the retrofit principle on an old industrial saw, the researchers inform. A low-cost sensor records time series data and transfers it to the cloud. Subsequently, the AI-based algorithms are adjusted and optimized to monitor the condition of the saw blade and provide recommendations for action. Companies will be able to implement the "intelligent" maintenance planning on their own use cases with Fraunhofer IEM from summer 2024.

The cooperation between Lenze subsidiary Encoway and Fraunhofer IEM was also supported in the BMBF project "EASY" (Embedded Artificial Intelligence for Production Systems, duration 10/2020 to 12/2023). Another project partner was Düspohl Maschinenbau.
