The trucking industry is working on alternatives to internal combustion engines, and hydrogen is, as is well known, an alternative to diesel. That is why the companies mentioned above plan, among other things, to establish a network of refueling stations in Europe. They are united by the common goal of making hydrogen competitive, with a focus on infrastructure and competitive prices. The companies plan to announce further details on September 15 at a press conference in Hanover. Daimler Truck, Toyota, and Volvo are already partners with fuel cell manufacturer Cellcentric, as we’ve also learned. The company is headquartered in Kirchheim (Germany) unter Teck, near Stuttgart in Swabia, and develops, produces, and markets fuel cell systems for heavy-duty commercial vehicles. However, building a comprehensive hydrogen ecosystem to complement battery-electric variants requires coordination across the entire value chain—hence the collaboration. Although Daimler Truck already offers battery-electric trucks, such as the Actros, their share of total sales is still negligible. At the same time, the Swabian company is working on hydrogen-based powertrains. Following tests with prototypes, Daimler Truck plans to launch a small series of 100 vehicles for customer use by the end of this year, with the aim of moving the technology beyond its niche status.
