Mercedes-Benz's profit increased by 13.5 percent in the second quarter of this year, according to a report from dpa. From April to June, the group’s earnings rose from 957 million euros (approx. $1.03 billion) to around 1.09 billion euros (approx. $1.17 billion), compared to the same period last year. Most recently, the company achieved a gain in group earnings in the second quarter of 2023 compared to the previous year. However, revenue fell by 3.3 percent (to slightly more than 32 billion euros / approx. $34.4 billion). Operating profit (EBIT) increased by 21.5 percent (to around 1.55 billion euros / approx. $1.66 billion), the report further states. According to the company, Mercedes has continued to improve its efficiency and productivity. Cost reduction measures from a savings program apparently supported the results in the second quarter. Additionally, contributions came from the Vans and Financial Services divisions, which helped offset the weakening passenger car segment. Naturally, US tariffs are currently causing difficulties as well.

Above all, the China business Is Slowing Mercedes' Success

However, a significant decline in China once again led to a drop in sales for Mercedes-Benz in the second quarter. The Stuttgart-based company (Germany) sold only around 512,000 cars and vans, representing a six percent decrease compared to the same quarter last year. In the passenger car segment, sales in China plummeted by 30 percent. As a result, the group’s earnings for the first six months of the year decreased by 6.3 percent (to around 2.52 billion euros / approx. $2.71 billion). Revenue for the first half-year shows a decline of 4.1 percent compared to the previous year. EBIT recorded a decrease of 3.1 percent. However, as mentioned, things at Mercedes have not been running smoothly for some time. In 2025, profit nearly halved (from 10.4 billion euros / approx. $11.2 billion to 5.3 billion euros / approx. $5.7 billion) after already falling by 28.4 percent in 2024 compared to the prior year. For this reason, a cost-saving program has been in place for about a year and was recently intensified. Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius is now relying on new models for the second half of the year. Källenius commented, "Even in a challenging market environment, we stayed on course in the second quarter and accelerated our model offensive. The response to the new models has been very positive!"
