To make it easier to program complex chamfers and edges, the latest version of the 3D CAD/CAM software "Lantek Expert" has been enhanced with several new features.

Bevels can provide workpieces with structural strength and increase the durability of welds by creating larger contact surfaces between two components. In sheet metal fabrication, chamfering eliminates additional machining steps after the actual cutting process and enables more precise edges. That is why the IT expert Lantek has implemented two key functions related to chamfering in its software. Christoph Lenhard, head of the Lantek office for the DACH region, comments: “The newly added functions are aligned with current market trends toward comprehensive automation, more flexible and reliable automatic nesting, and advanced strategies for multi-angle machining.”

Standard And 3D Chamfers (optional)

For one thing, it is now possible to use the drawing module in the CAD/CAM software to create both standard and 3D chamfers for a single part. “This feature makes designing components much easier. Now, users no longer have to choose between constant or variable chamfers, but can use both strategies together—and thus also design components with more complex edges,” explains Christoph Lenhard.

The second feature in Lantek’s updated software boosts efficiency during chamfering by using an economical cut, thereby reducing material consumption, scrap, and processing time. If a part with a Y-bevel is placed next to a part that is already positioned, the system automatically checks whether both workpieces can be cut simultaneously. If this is possible, it automatically adjusts the distance between the sheets so that both bevel edges are cut in a single step.

Christoph Lenhard comments: “These two new features in ‘Lantek Expert’ represent the path toward more automated, smarter, and connected manufacturing, a journey on which Lantek aims to support companies in the sheet metal fabrication industry. This feature complements the function for shared cutting between two parts with V-seams when one part is placed mirrored to the other, which was introduced in the previous version.”

Calculate instead of estimate

To calculate manufacturing costs more accurately for quotes, Lantek has developed its software “iQuoting”. It helps digitize quoting processes with minimal financial investment and little impact on operations. The software integrates advanced calculation methods, including models that learn from real production data. To estimate costs early on, the platform takes business rules into account. It also uses calculation models based on production processes and machine learning models trained with real manufacturing and sales data. If only a small amount of historical data is available, the system relies on parameterized models and criteria defined by the company itself. This allows quotes to be generated from the outset, with their accuracy continuously improving as the base of operational data grows. Artificial intelligence thus complements and enhances the system’s accuracy.
