The step towards optical artificial intelligence?

Even though the focus with these switchable surfaces was primarily to demonstrate the basic principle, the research group envisions several potential applications. Since these surfaces can switch between different property states with light, it makes sense to use them for novel sensors. Similarly, it is conceivable that such switchable surfaces could be used for optical data processing. It would also be promising if these components could be utilized for optical neural networks, which could then analyze image information in the same way that electronic artificial intelligence can already do. And because this type of data processing is based on light instead of electronics, it is significantly more energy-efficient and faster than traditional computer-based AI systems.
