Fully automated vehicle assembly by 2030 and slower growth in artificial intelligence: These are the two key findings of the automotive industry report from the analytics firm Gartner.

The market research firm Gartner predicts that by 2030 "at least one automaker will achieve fully automated vehicle assembly." Nearly half of the world's leading automakers – twelve out of 25 – are testing advanced robots in their factories, according to analysts. Lower labor costs, shorter production cycles, and better quality could mean better vehicles for consumers at potentially lower prices.

The direct need for human labor in vehicle assembly could decrease, according to analysts – however, new tasks in AI monitoring, robot maintenance, and software development could offset the losses if retraining programs are prioritized.

Significantly Slower Growth in AI

The analysts also predict that by 2029, only five percent of automakers will maintain strong growth in their AI investments – a decline from over 95 percent today. "The automotive industry is currently experiencing a phase of AI euphoria, where many companies are pursuing disruptive innovations before establishing a solid AI foundation," the company states. "This euphoria will ultimately turn into disappointment, as these companies will fail to achieve the ambitious goals they have set for AI."

Focus on AI Brings Competitive Advantage

Companies with a solid software foundation, technology-oriented leadership, and a consistent, long-term focus on AI will differentiate themselves from the competition and create a competitive advantage in artificial intelligence, the analysts write. Furthermore, it is more likely "that automotive companies whose executives have strong technical expertise will make AI their top priority, rather than adhering to the traditional priorities of an automotive company," Gartner states.
