Relations between the two sides have long been tense following the EU's additional tariffs on Chinese electric cars, investigations into products from both sides and China's export controls on important raw materials. Following a debate in Brussels, the People's Republic of China is now even more hopeful that the EU will adhere to free trade and fair competition and reject protectionism and unilateralism, according to the Ministry of Commerce in Beijing. However, should the EU introduce new unilateral trade instruments or discriminatory restrictions, Beijing will strike back decisively and take effective measures to protect its interests.

Trade And Investment Relations Are Not Sustainable

The background: The College of Commissioners, consisting of 27 representatives, recently discussed the relationship with the People's Republic in a policy debate. No decisions were made (although none were expected), but instead discussions were held at the upcoming G7 summit and the European Council meeting in mid-June. China is therefore an important partner. The exchange and dialog would continue. At the same time, however, the current state of trade and investment relations is not sustainable, the statement continued. Due to the stronger intertwining of economic and security policy interests, both dimensions require a more determined and unified response. Meanwhile, Beijing emphasized that the channels of communication between China and the EU were open. However, the People's Republic also referred to ongoing talks with Brussels on the establishment of a consultation mechanism for trade and investment.
