The electrification of road traffic, especially commercial vehicles, is an important step towards the mobility transition. Advances in battery technology and the expansion of charging infrastructure are making this development increasingly practical. Phoenix Contact E-Mobility supports the transformation of the commercial vehicle sector to electromobility with its CCS megawatt charging cable Charx connect professional. This enables the fast charging of large commercial vehicle batteries with a power of up to 1 MW, promoting the acceptance and practical use of electric commercial vehicles.
With a power of 1 MW, even large commercial vehicles in long-distance logistics can be charged within a reasonable time using the CCS standard. This advancement is important for both the acceptance and practical use of electric commercial vehicles. Electric commercial vehicles are considered the most cost-efficient solution for logistics in the long term due to lower operating costs and less maintenance effort.
Electrification in Logistics
Logistics companies are often critical of electrifying their vehicles. This concerns the high acquisition costs, the sometimes still expandable ranges of e-trucks, and the comparatively small number of available models. In addition, the charging infrastructure, as a fundamental requirement, must be reliable. Downtime and delays caused by defective, unavailable, or throttled charging infrastructure are costly. Reliable products for a reliable charging infrastructure network are essential.
Long-distance logistics, in particular, relies on large battery capacities and reasonable charging times. After 4.5 hours of driving, a 45-minute break is mandatory, which must be sufficient for recharging the battery. The HPC upgrade transfers 1 MW in boost mode for 5 minutes at an ambient temperature of 40°C.
HPC Charging with Reimagined Cooling
Through consistent development of HPC technology and years of experience in high power charging, the specialists from Schieder have significantly increased the power limits. This includes cooling, optimized cable structures, and real-time temperature monitoring. The second generation of liquid-cooled CCS charging connectors takes HPC charging to a new level: in boost mode, 1,000 kW and a continuous 800 kW are transmitted.
This is made possible by an improved cooling concept. Insulated cooling lines are used, which are directly wrapped with copper foils. This creates a significantly larger contact surface between the copper and the cooling medium. The contacts are also equipped with an insulating foil. This allows the coolant to reach the hottest contact points directly, efficiently dissipating the heat. The coolant is an environmentally friendly and low-maintenance water-glycol mixture, which has already proven effective in the first generation of cooled HPC charging connectors.
Comfortable Maintenance and Safety

The plug face frame and all contacts (DC+, DC-, PE, CP, PP) of the HPC charging connector can be individually or entirely replaced on-site at the installed charging station. Opening the housing or draining the coolant is not necessary for this. This allows the service technician to maintain the charging cable cost-effectively and easily. Since the calibration capsule remains untouched, re-calibration of the charging connector after the repair is not required.
The charging connector offers high safety due to its robust design and integrated real-time temperature monitoring. Monitoring with Pt-1000 sensors ensures that the charging connectors do not overheat. Another safety feature is the integrated leak detection for coolant. A leak is detected by the insulation monitor of the charging station even before the charging process begins. Since the insulation monitor is required by standards, this safety feature does not need additional electronics and incurs no extra costs.

To measure the power loss in the charging cable, the electrical resistance is determined using four-wire measurement technology. This is crucial for compliant billing according to the Measurement and Verification Act. All prerequisites for reliable and legally compliant billing of charging processes are thus ensured.
Future Prospects and Upgrades
With the CCS charging plug, many electric commercial vehicles are quickly ready for use again on the DC charging side. Upgrades to the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) will follow. (kr)
