In view of the earnings crisis in the traditional automotive business, Bosch would rather focus more on the rapidly growing future markets of automation via AI and humanoid robotics.

Bosch is deep in crisis. For the first time since 2009, the Group posted a post-tax loss of 415 million dollars, after profits had already halved in the previous year. This is set to change again soon—partly with the backing of politicians. Because Bosch is moving the future—on wheels and with arms! At least that's what Bosch digital boss Tanja Rückert said at the "Bosch Connected World (BCW)" industry event in Berlin, Germany. And Bosch Group CEO Stefan Hartung made it clear that with the trend towards humanoid robots (also known as humanoids for short), the need for Bosch expertise in this area is growing rapidly. Hartung held out the prospect of developing this segment into a business worth billions. The supplier giant is pursuing a clear distribution of roles:

Bosch MEMS Sensors Promise Lucrative Results

Bosch therefore does not want to act as a manufacturer of humanoid robots itself, but rather contribute the brain and nervous system for these systems as a partner, so to speak. Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS sensors) play an important role here. These sensors, in which Bosch is already the world market leader, as is emphasized, give robots a fine sense of touch, for example to distinguish sensitive glass from a more robust object. It is therefore a highly lucrative market, as it is also estimated that the market volume for MEMS sensors will grow to over 19.2 billion dollars by 2030.

Own Robotics Company And Cooperations at Bosch

In order to accelerate industrialization, the Group has founded the new unit Robert Bosch Robotics GmbH and is bundling its activities for the Asian market in the new Bosch Robotics Center China (BROC), according to the statement. Partnerships with start-ups—such as the German company Neura Robotics, which has now raised over a billion dollars from investors—are intended to drive forward the development of cognitive robots. Bosch uses a wealth of data from over 230 of its own plants worldwide, which is unique in the industry, as the basis for training artificial intelligence, according to the statement.
