The difference between computer and brain

However, another difference lies in the causal structure of computers and brains. Because in a classic computer, data always has to be loaded from memory, then processed in the computing unit, and finally stored back in memory, as Wiese describes. There is no such separation in the brain, and therefore a different causal networking of different brain areas. Wiese therefore argues that this could be a consciousness-relevant difference between brains and classic computers. In his view, the perspective offered by the principle of free energy is interesting mainly because it allows us to describe features of conscious beings that could in principle be realized in artificial systems but are not present in large classes of artificial systems (like computer simulations). Wiese concludes: "This makes it possible to capture the conditions for consciousness in artificial systems more finely and precisely."
