In the EU project Pods4Rail, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and partners from research and industry have developed an innovative, automated mobility concept. The goal is to better integrate rail transport with road and cableways.The focus is on standardized capsules, known as pods, which are combined with mobile carrier units for different modes of transport. The carrier units handle the chassis, propulsion, energy supply, and other technical systems. This way, the capsule itself does not need to be reloaded when the mode of transport changes.

People and goods remain in the same capsule the entire time and are transferred with it to another carrier unit if needed. The project refers to this principle as "supermodality."

Technology for Automated Transfer

A key focus of the project was the technical implementation of the system. The DLR investigated, among other things, modular and lightweight vehicle structures, energy requirements, the climate control of the capsules, and the interfaces between capsules and carrier units.Further work dealt with automated locking and handling systems. The capsule must be securely connected to and reliably detached from different carrier units. Communication between vehicles, infrastructure, and traffic management was also part of the investigations.Additionally, the project team analyzed requirements for standards, approval procedures, and safety in road and rail transport. The results were incorporated into functional requirements for the capsules, carrier units, and the overall system.

Basis for Further Development

Pods4Rail was implemented with 15 participants from seven European countries and funded with around three million euros (approx. $3.2 million) by the European Union as part of Europe’s Rail and Horizon Europe. The DLR participated with five institutes.The project results are intended to serve as a basis for further development and testing of individual components. In the next step, approval, cost-effectiveness, and integration into existing transport networks must be examined, among other things. The planned follow-up project “PREFER” (Pods and Regional Flexible Efficient Rolling Stock) is expected to start later this year under the leadership of the DLR.
