Carbon: Variable customizable high-performance elastomer

Carbon introduces its latest elastomer material, EPU 46. This combines the high-performance material properties of a shape-retaining yet elastically deformable plastic with long durability and a variety of color options. This allows for the individual production of a wide range of high-quality products such as saddles, shoes, and grips.

The new elastomer material EPU is made of 40 percent bio-based raw material.

EPU 46 is designed to meet the growing demands of various industries, with an emphasis on performance, comfort, and aesthetics. Customers can specifically adjust the material thickness without compromising deformability or altering material properties. Furthermore, the elastomer underscores Carbon's sustainability efforts, as it consists of 40 percent bio-based raw material and is designed for solvent-free spin cleaning and resin recovery, thereby reducing production waste to a minimum.

The dual curing and energy return properties of EPU 46 offer numerous benefits:

  • Speed and adaptability: According to the manufacturer, the EPU-46 platform offers a wide range of colors and material thicknesses while maintaining optimal processability and short print times.

  • Color fastness: By directly adding pigments to the resin, it is ensured that the color does not change or wear away due to abrasion.

  • Increased material strength: The tuning of lattice parameters, such as the diameter of the struts or the cell size, allows for a wide range of component stiffnesses. With the option to also adjust the material's strength, a broad spectrum of tactile functions is possible, particularly suitable for grips and thin parts where it is difficult to produce a soft compression.

EPU 46 is an expansion of Carbon's elastomer portfolio and is distinguished by market-leading printability of the elastomer and broader mechanical properties.
