In the Spanish Martorell, the Cupra Raval and the Volkswagen ID. Polo are now rolling off the assembly line. Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Oliver Blume, CEO of the Volkswagen Group, Thomas Schäfer, member of the VW Board of Management and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Seat & Cupra, as well as Markus Haupt, CEO of Seat & Cupra, participated in the ceremonial production launch at the Seat & Cupra plant.

Made in Europe—Volkswagen is now shaping this from Spain. The ID. Polo and the Cupra Raval are now being produced at the Seat & Cupra plant. Thus, Martorell plays an important role in the automaker's electric small car offensive. From here, they aim to "make electromobility accessible across the entire continent." This project, led by Seat & Cupra on behalf of the Volkswagen Group's Core brand group, includes four fully electric models from three different brands, all manufactured in Spain.

Massive Investments

"The urban electric vehicle family demonstrates how the Core brand group utilizes synergies and promotes collaboration within the Group to realize electromobility on a large scale," emphasizes Thomas Schäfer. "The success of Seat & Cupra in leading a cross-brand project for the first time showcases the strength of our model. The shared platform enhances competitiveness in the entry-level segment. At the same time, it enables cost savings of 600 million euros (approx. $645 million) and serves as the basis for four clearly differentiated models. Together, these achievements lay the foundation for the democratization of electromobility across Europe." The Volkswagen Group, together with partners, has invested around ten billion euros in Spain to transform and expand the electromobility infrastructure. Martorell alone received three billion euros. Additionally, up to 300,000 electric cars per year are expected to roll off the production line there.

Range of up to 454 kilometers

At the end of April 2026, pre-sales for the ID. Polo started at prices beginning from €24,995 (approx. $26,900). The fully electric version follows in the footsteps of one of the most successful models in the history of the Wolfsburg car manufacturer. After selling over 20 million units, the Polo now enters a new chapter. According to the manufacturer, the vehicle will achieve a WLTP range of up to 454 kilometers (282 miles). Additionally, the electric car scores with a new front-wheel drive concept, which also results in more space. The compact drive modules of the MEB+, an evolution of the Modular Electric Drive Toolkit, grant passengers 19 mm more interior space compared to the classic Polo. Interior width and headroom have also increased. The trunk volume has grown by around 25%—from 351 to 441 liters. The centerpiece of the newly developed drive system is the newly introduced electric motor, the APP290. APP stands for Axial Parallel Position, while the 290 refers to the maximum torque in Nm. According to Volkswagen, the electric motor will initially be available in three power levels: 85 kW (116 PS), 99 kW (135 PS), and 155 kW (211 PS). Mounted to the motor housing is the 1-speed transmission with its housing and the also newly developed pulse inverter.

With PowerCo, Volkswagen has its own subsidiary that supplies batteries across the Group—with Porsche being the exception. This is also where the name "unified cell" comes from. Founded in 2022, the subsidiary is currently expanding gigafactories in Salzgitter, Valencia, and St. Thomas in Canada with a total volume of up to 200 GWh. Production in Salzgitter was able to begin at the end of last year. The cells manufactured here will be installed in the ID. Polo, as well as in the Cupra Raval.

In the ID.Polo, the manufacturer has integrated the unified cell between the front and rear axles in the vehicle floor. The new battery system uses the cell-to-pack technology, where the cells are directly assembled into a battery pack without the intermediate step of module housings.

Cupra Raval is Coming in Summer 2026

The introduction of the Cupra Raval is set to mark a new chapter in the history of Seat & Cupra. At four meters in length, the urban electric car offers a sporty silhouette with a driver-focused, inviting, and optimally utilized interior. The electric car incorporates 3D-knitted CUP bucket seats and dynamic light projections in the door panels. Based on Volkswagen's MEB+ platform, the CUPRA Raval creates its own segment to redefine urban electromobility. It will be launched in three versions and offers a range of around 450 kilometers (280 miles). The vehicle is scheduled to celebrate its market debut in the summer of 2026.
