Injection molding and mold making technologies have been an integral part of Toolcraft AG's service portfolio for 20 years. The successful expansion of these areas is attributed to continuous investments in expertise and modern machinery. In addition to processing common thermoplastics and high-temperature materials, Toolcraft now also manufactures components from liquid silicone rubber (LSR). This involves a cup lid and a magnifying glass made from this elastomer.

Fundamentally different parts from an injection molding tool

With the expertise of partners in injection molding and mold making, Toolcraft has successfully developed and manufactured a sophisticated, innovative product from LSR. Together with researchers from SKZ, Günther Heisskanaltechnik (Hot runner technology ), the standard parts expert Meusburger, and the surface finisher Bestenlehrer, two molded parts with completely different geometries were made possible from liquid silicone. This was achieved using a single tool in one shot, as emphasized. The project involved a cup lid with a diameter of 100 millimeters (approx. 3,9 inches) and a maximum wall thickness of seven millimeters, with a shot weight of 28 grams. Additionally, a magnifying glass with a diameter of 35 millimeters (approx. 1,4 inches) and a shot weight of six grams was molded.

LSR precision is long available for the industry

A challenge was the significant difference in shot weight between the two molded parts, which can be compensated for by using a balanced needle valve tool. For the basic structure and inserts of the injection molding tool, corrosion-resistant steels with good polishing properties were used.

The help of partners and expertise in manufacturing precise small parts eventually enabled Toolcraft to build the tool for LSR injection molding. In the meantime, silicone tools for the industry are also being manufactured there.
