The FPGA development board Shrike-lite is particularly interesting for FPGA beginners, as it is equipped with both a powerful chip, the Renesas-SLG47910V-FPGA, as well as the Raspberry Pi RP2040 microcontroller. The design incorporates a 6-bit channel to enable communication between the FPGA and the microcontroller, allowing processing to occur on either chip as needed, complementing their respective strengths.

The FPGA offers an impressive 1,120 LUTs (Look-Up Tables) with five inputs and 14 exposed GPIO pins. The microcontroller adds 23 GPIO pins and the widely popular 32-bit dual-core ARM Cortex-M0+ processor, which can be overclocked beyond its rated 200 MHz—at your own risk. Beyond that, the board features a minimalist design to keep costs low. It also includes a PMOD connector, an integrated FPGA-MCU-IO interface, a QSPI flash chip for configuration and storage, two user LEDs, and a USB-C port for power supply and programming.

The developers of Vicharak designed the board with affordability, openness, and ecosystem support in mind. Everything—from the hardware schematics to the software toolchain—is open source and available for download on GitHub.

The Shrike-lite is extremely affordable at just $4 and is slated to be available starting November 15. Preorders are already being accepted. However, the manufacturer Vicharak is based in India and is still searching for distributors. As a result, shipping costs can far exceed the price of a single board.
