Renesas has acquired Pictorus, a software developer based in Oakland, California, through a subsidiary. Pictorus develops a cloud-based platform for model-based system development. Engineers can use it to visually describe and simulate the behavior of embedded systems and derive software from those models.

Renesas plans to integrate the technology into its Renesas 365 platform. This platform is designed to bring together various stages of electronics development, from early design through software implementation to product lifecycle management.

A key focus is on applications in the automotive industry, robotics, and industrial equipment. In these sectors, the proportion of software is increasing, making early validation and shorter development cycles increasingly important.

Pictorus enables the description of system behavior using block diagrams in a web browser. The platform can generate executable embedded software from these diagrams, including in Rust, with integration into C, C++, and Python. This provides Renesas with additional capabilities for simulation, prototyping, and code generation within its development portfolio.(sg)
