The Linz-based company Iono Robotics has unveiled its humanoid robot, Workmate, to the public for the first time. The robot was developed for real-world work environments—not just for demonstrations or laboratory settings. According to the company, Workmate is designed to assist with repetitive, physically demanding, and simple tasks in industry, logistics, retail, and the service sector.

The humanoid robot features a concept that is unique worldwide: Workmate’s head houses an integrated drone that can be launched directly from the robot system. Thanks to this drone, the robot can also survey, inspect, or expand its surroundings from the air. The modular multi-head concept will enable future upgrades, such as additional sensors or robotic tools, to be integrated directly into the system’s head.

In addition to the hardware, Iono Robotics unveiled Ionosphere, a closed-loop system comprising robotic AI, control systems, and server and software infrastructure. The platform is designed to ensure maximum security, control, and European data sovereignty in the operation of humanoid robot systems. All components—from robotic control to data processing—are engineered for secure industrial applications.

A System for Real-World Work

“We didn’t want to develop a humanoid robot for the stage, but rather a system for real-world work,” explains Ümit Bas, founder and CEO of Iono Robotics. “There is already a need for humanoid assistance in many fields today. That is exactly why we are building safe humanoid systems with a focus on productivity, safety, and data sovereignty.”

In addition to Workmate, Iono Robotics develops its own platform technologies, such as the Iono Skin sensor skin, modular sensor systems, and software and AI infrastructure for industrial applications. The company focuses on humanoid robots that can be integrated into existing work environments without requiring new infrastructure.

The company is already working with industry partners on pilot projects in Austria, Germany, and Italy.
