Two years after the launch of Chat GPT, a study by the Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation shows that the enthusiasm for generative AI in Germany is waning, as is the fear of the technology.

According to the study by the Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation (BIDT), around 73 percent of internet users in Germany have heard of generative AI, but only 35 percent actively use these technologies. The level of usage remains stable compared to the previous year. The most popular applications are Chat GPT, used by 81 percent of users, followed by Google Gemini (30 percent) and Microsoft Copilot (26 percent). Only 25 percent of working individuals use the technology in their professional lives, but report positive effects such as time savings and creative inspiration, according to the study officials.

The study also shows that a significant portion of users (70 percent) critically review the generated content. Antonia Schlude, a scientific advisor at the BIDT Think Tank, emphasizes that particularly higher-qualified professional groups will be affected by the changes brought about by generative AI. "An interesting result of our study is that where the technology is used so far, its added value is usually recognized," she explains.

Decreasing fears, but ongoing skepticism

Concerns about job loss due to generative AI have decreased compared to the previous year: only four percent of working individuals fear becoming completely redundant in the next ten years, down from eleven percent the previous year. Despite this decline, skepticism remains high. Fifty-eight percent of users with experience in generative AI expect the partial loss of their own tasks, while for users without experience, it's only 39 percent.

Regulation of generative AI

The EU AI Regulation, which came into force in August 2024, is known to only 36 percent of respondents. Nevertheless, there is a clear demand for increased regulation: 50 percent of respondents are in favor. Roland A. Stürz of the BIDT Think Tank points to the necessity for comprehensive information offerings and clear guidelines for dealing with generative AI to exploit potentials and minimize risks.

The study shows that both politics and society are challenged to actively shape the change and create a regulated framework for the use of generative AI.
