At the IAA, CATL unveiled its new Shenxing Pro battery—an LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery with a range of up to 470 miles, capable of fast charging even at –4 °F, and built to last over 620,000 miles. The battery manufacturer used the IAA in Munich as a stage to showcase its latest battery technology. It was the world premiere of the new NP3.0 platform and the global launch of the first LFP battery developed using this technology. The new product is called Shenxing Pro.

“The battery was developed with the driving habits of Europeans in mind,” said Lingbo Zhu, CTO of CATL's international division during the launch. It comes in two versions. The first, a “Long-Life” variant with extended range, addresses two key needs specific to the European market.

Designed for Long-Distance European Travel

To support the many long, cross-border journeys common in Europe, the battery offers a range of over 470 miles—significantly more than most LFP batteries currently on the market.

Another nod to the European customer profile is the battery’s long lifespan. CATL claims it can last over 12 years or more than one million kilometers, making it a strong fit for Europe’s popular long-term leasing market. According to CATL representatives, the Long-Life Shenxing Pro is “the world's longest-lasting car battery.”

Fast Charging at –4 °F

The second version of the Shenxing Pro is an “ultra-fast charging” variant, specifically designed for Europe’s cold winters, said CATL's CTO. Even at temperatures as low as –4 °F—where other batteries struggle—this version can recharge from 20% to 80% in just 20 minutes. It offers a range of 420 miles.

Both versions thus exceed the typical 190–310 miles range of current LFP batteries. With 470 miles and 420 miles ranges, they can nearly match the performance of nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries, which are popular in Europe’s mid- to high-end vehicle segments.

According to Chinese automotive portal Yiche, the NP3.0 platform “makes it easier for European OEMs to adopt LFP batteries by bringing fast-charging and low-temperature performance almost to the level of ternary (NMC) lithium batteries—while maintaining the cost advantage of LFP.”

Three Battery Plants for the EU Market

“Our global journey begins here in Europe,” said CATL executive Tan Libin at the presentation. He emphasized that CATL already collaborates with about 90% of European automakers. Following its key customer BYD into the European market, CATL has heavily invested in local production.

It already operates a battery plant in Arnstadt, Germany; a second facility in Debrecen, Hungary is under construction. A third factory, in Zaragoza, Spain, will be built in partnership with Stellantis.

Eight Innovations of the NP3.0 Platform

The newly introduced NP3.0 battery technology is being marketed by CATL in China primarily for its advancements in safety. According to the Chinese industry publication 36kr, the new platform incorporates eight newly developed components: a flame-retardant electrolyte, a flame-retardant safety separator film, a cathode material coated with nanomaterials, a cell safety device, an aerogel thermal insulation pad, a fire-resistant coating, a circuit stability control system, and a high-voltage cooling and system control strategy.

At the product launch in Munich, Germany, CATL spokespeople claimed that sudden battery fires in EVs are now extremely unlikely. Even in the rare case of thermal runaway, the NP3.0 batteries are designed to immediately block heat spread between cells, preventing a full-scale battery fire.

One Hour of Power Even After Overheating

Even in the unlikely event of a thermal incident, the Shenxing Pro can continue to supply stable energy for up to one hour, allowing the driver to safely exit the highway or reach a service location. With the Shenxing Pro, CATL has clearly raised the bar for LFP batteries in both range and performance.
