Automotive functions such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), new climate control, and infotainment systems require higher performance and more efficient energy conversion solutions while minimizing battery strain. This increases the demand for compact and efficient power supply solutions made possible by the semiconductor material gallium nitride.

In particular, with the shift from 12- to 48-volt systems in software-defined vehicles (SDV), GaN power conversion systems enable not only improved performance but also advanced functions such as steer-by-wire and real-time chassis control, enhancing driving comfort and handling.

AEC-Q101 Qualified Samples Delivered

Infineon's new family of 100 V CoolGaN transistors features high efficiency in a space-saving design and is suitable for applications such as zone control and main DC/DC converters, high-powered auxiliary systems, and Class-D audio amplifiers.

Samples of the 100 V GaN transistors from the AEC-Q101-qualified pre-production products are already being delivered to automotive customers, including high-voltage CoolGaN automotive transistors and bidirectional switches. The transistors are intended for use in low-voltage infotainment systems and, in the future, in high-voltage solutions in onboard chargers and traction inverters. The portfolio of GaN semiconductor solutions for the automotive sector will be continuously expanded to further drive the adoption of GaN solutions in the automotive industry.

"Infineon will further expand its global leadership position in semiconductor solutions for the automotive industry by bringing GaN power technology to the growing market for software-defined and electric vehicles," says Johannes Schoiswohl, Head of the GaN Business Unit at Infineon. "Our 100 V GaN automotive transistor solutions and the upcoming portfolio expansion into the high-voltage range are an important milestone in the development of energy-efficient and reliable power transistors for automotive applications."
