Everything at AMB revolves around metalworking: machine tools, tools—but also components that perform their work in and on the machine. They must meet specific requirements. We will introduce a few of these to you.

Tschudin: Eliminate thermal drift—with carbon spindle

For the external cylindrical grinding machine Cube 350 with perfect thermal behavior, the grinding experts at Tschudin rely on entirely new grinding and regulating spindles made of carbon. This spindle concept delivers a new dimension of accuracy and material removal performance, as minimizing thermal expansion guarantees production with consistently high precision. Thus, the Cube 350 is the first grinding machine without thermal growth.

This concept offers numerous advantages: By minimizing thermal expansion, production with consistently high accuracy is guaranteed at all times. A warm-up phase for the machine is no longer necessary; it can immediately produce within a dimensional deviation of a maximum of 1 µm. Even with multi-track grinding, all parts can be manufactured to the exact dimensions—grinding and regulating wheels remain parallel because thermal displacement is prevented. In this way, according to the manufacturer, the Cube 350 enables very long periods of autonomous operation and unmanned shifts.

Carbon spindle: higher machining performance possible

For more than six months, the carbon spindles developed in collaboration with Carbon-Drive GmbH have been tested and adjusted. The temperature resistance of carbon fibers is particularly high—therefore, spindles made of carbon prevent thermal expansion in the machine. They are more dimensionally stable and have higher flexural rigidity, which allows them to achieve greater depths of cut, ultimately leading to higher material removal rates. In some test series, the carbon spindles have so far been shown to be 10 to 20 percent more effective than steel spindles.

Based in Weiterstadt, Hesse, Carbon-Drive GmbH is the exclusive Tschudin development and construction partner for carbon spindles in the centerless grinding sector. Managing Director Dr.-Ing. Martin Klimach explains, "Spindles made from carbon fibers come with various advantages, foremost being minimal thermal expansion. Depending on the type of fiber and fiber orientation, we can manufacture carbon spindles with different properties to respond to the process needs of our customers." His company had already worked on milling spindles made from carbon fibers. The idea to use carbon spindles in the grinding sector emerged in 2019. By the end of 2023, the first spindle was completed, and since then, testing and refinement have been ongoing. The innovation is now making its world premiere at AMB.

The Cube 350 will continue to be equipped with steel spindles in the standard version. Carbon spindles are available as an option.
