Additive Manufacturing Is Not Automatically Sustainable

The sustainability of the developed manufacturing process was also a key focus of Clasco. The investigations revealed that additive manufacturing is not automatically more sustainable simply because it can save material during the production of a component. Instead, a comprehensive assessment must consider all steps of the process chain. Factors such as the production of the metal powder, its recovery and reuse, processing time, energy consumption, and the use of inert gases all influence the overall balance. The project demonstrated that, in particular, the reuse of metal powder and efficient post-processing are crucial factors for achieving more sustainable additive metal manufacturing.

Now Everything Is to Become Even More Stable and Efficient

The results not only provide new manufacturing technologies but also insights into the conditions under which these technologies can be used particularly resource-efficiently. With the formal conclusion of Clasco, the work on the developed technologies does not end. The project partners aim to further bring the results into practice and utilize them for industrial systems, processing services, technology licenses, contract research, and follow-up projects. The next steps focus on making the processes more robust and efficient and extending the developed methods to other industrial applications. In addition to aerospace and medical technology, the approach could be used wherever complex, high-quality metal components require surfaces with precisely defined properties.
