BMW has begun series production of Gen6 high-voltage batteries in Shenyang. Local production will supply the New Class models that will be manufactured in China in the future. Following Debrecen and Irlbach-Straßkirchen, Shenyang is the third location in the new global production network for Gen6 battery technology.

Compared to the previous generation of cells, the Gen6 high-voltage battery offers more than 20 percent higher energy density. Charging speed and range increase by up to 30 percent. This is made possible by the “cell-to-pack” concept: The cylindrical cells are integrated directly into the battery housing, eliminating the previous module level. This allows for more efficient use of the available installation space; as a result, the high-voltage battery can be flexibly integrated into various vehicle models.

The Energy Master plays a key role in this: This central control unit, developed by BMW, is located directly on the high-voltage battery and consolidates essential functions related to power supply and battery management.

"Local-for-Local" Strategy

The automaker is establishing a global production network for the new generation of high-voltage batteries. The batteries will be manufactured near each vehicle plant. This shortens transportation distances, supports a stable supply, and strengthens the resilience of the production network. Following Debrecen and Irlbach-Straßkirchen, Shenyang is the third location in the global network. In the coming months, the company plans to have the battery assembly plants in Woodruff (U.S.) and San Luis Potosí (Mexico) begin series production as well.

Through local battery production, BMW is strengthening its “Local-for-Local” strategy: Future technologies are industrialized close to the market and in accordance with globally uniform standards—and manufactured where the vehicles are produced. This makes production and logistics more efficient and resilient.

Manufacturing Process

The battery cells are first inspected and then connected to the coolers to form what are known as cell clusters. After laser cleaning, the cell clusters and cell contact system are precisely welded together. A special foaming process bonds the components into a single mechanical unit, contributing to the safety, stability, and longevity of the high-voltage battery. The housing is then closed, sealed, and riveted. In the final assembly step, the Energy Master is installed before each high-voltage battery undergoes a complete end-of-line inspection.

Furthermore, according to the company, the production of high-voltage batteries combines precise manufacturing processes with end-to-end digital quality assurance. Production data is collected and analyzed throughout the entire process. Digital twins, data analytics, and AI-supported testing methods help identify deviations early on and ensure traceability. Inline inspection systems monitor, among other things, the laser welds in real time. At the end of the assembly process, every high-voltage battery is tested for quality, safety, and functionality.
