KHS has minimized potential error sources in the context of 3D plant planning. Now, the result can be obtained in real time, as users can see how a future system can be integrated into their production environment in a single appointment. After the introduction of three-dimensional plant planning already in the quotation phase two years ago, the Dortmund-based full-service provider KHS has now implemented a decisive expansion, as it emphasizes. The KHS service offering now also includes a new generation of mobile laser scanners and technically optimized VR glasses. The aim is to provide beverage producers with a clear and detailed 3D experience in the shortest possible time, which simplifies project planning and increases planning security many times over, as the experts explain.

Laser scanning prevents nasty surprises

The so-called laser scanning process offers precise capture of interference contours in production halls, according to KHS. The scanner records all possible obstacles in detail. If customers only have 20 to 30-year-old, often incomplete 2D drawings, this can lead to unpleasant surprises. This can occur already in the order phase, but in the worst case only during the commissioning. Ventilation systems, pillars or other obstacles, which disrupt the integration of the newly designed plants and machines, often suddenly appear. With the use of the latest 3D laser scanners, KHS now eliminates this source of error directly in the initial planning phase.

With a mobile laser scanner, KHS saves a lot of time

As part of the 3D plant planning, KHS used stationary laser scanners mounted on a tripod. However, to map the spatial conditions of an entire hall, these scanners had to be placed at a different location and realigned after each individual image capture. In contrast, the new generation of laser scanners significantly simplifies and accelerates this process. The operation is also intuitive. You simply hold the scanner in your hand—similar to a smartphone with camera and video function. As you move through the hall, the scanner captures images of the surroundings at a 270-degree angle. As a result, KHS now only needs about 20 percent of the time on-site, including post-processing, compared to before. The result is point clouds that show the exact data of the room, it is said.
