To defend against so-called glide bombs and other enemy missiles, Rheinmetall will be working closely with a South Korean defense company in the future, as was announced today at the Eurosatory trade show in Paris. Rheinmetall announced at the defense trade show that it will establish a joint venture with LIG Defence & Aerospace of Yongin and hold a majority stake in it. The joint venture is intended to build guided missiles to destroy glide bombs, for example, at a relatively low cost. Such a missile costs only a high five-figure euro amount, making it cheaper than larger missiles, which can cost over a million euros and have so far been used to counter the bombs out of necessity. Once again, the impetus came from the war in Ukraine, which highlighted the problem with glide bombs. Russian aircraft carry them to the border or the front lines, detach them, and then let them glide the final stretch through the air. Because they have no heat signature, they are difficult for air defense systems to detect—anti-aircraft guns are not suitable for eliminating them. However, the South Koreans not only manufacture missile systems but also sonars and naval drones, as we learn further. Their order books are reportedly full. Among their customers are the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They are now pooling their strengths and aim to jointly conduct research and development, market and sell, as well as manufacture in Europe, said LIG D&A CEO Ickhyun Shin. Europe is thus entering a new era of defense modernization.
