Summer toboggan runs, water slides, Alpine Coasters—in Chinese mountains, European amusement parks, American ski resorts, shopping malls, playgrounds, and even cruise ships, you can find leisure attractions from Josef Wiegand GmbH. In manufacturing, the company relies on deburring and edge rounding machines from Loewer.

At Josef Wiegand GmbH in Rasdorf (Germany), no compromises are made. From planning and financing to sophisticated design and manufacturing, to final assembly, maintenance, and after-sales support (e.g., service, TÜV), customers invest in the "Wiegand Complete Package" with the Hessian pioneer in leisure attractions. Years of expertise, extensive self-developed know-how, and a great deal of passion are evident in every step of the support process. The result: references that evoke vacation feelings. Whether in the Black Forest, in the Erdinger Therme, or on cruise ships like the Aida or the Icon of the Sea—everywhere you meet satisfied customers who enhance their offerings with leisure attractions invented and built by Wiegand.

As much as these attractions are associated with fun and lightheartedness, the safety requirements behind them are just as high. "Summer toboggan runs, water and dry slides are subject to high usage and extreme weather conditions and must therefore be manufactured very precisely and to high quality," says Dieter Hahn, a member of the management at Wiegand.

Sheet metal deburring and edge rounding

Wiegand receives support in this responsible task from grinding and deburring machine manufacturer Jakob Loewer Inh. von Schumann GmbH & Co. KG, which has been able to effectively complement the sophisticated manufacturing in the areas of sheet metal deburring and edge rounding.

Several Loewer machines assist Wiegand in optimal part deburring and edge rounding, with parts occasionally being fed to the appropriate machine automatically by a gripping robot. The Belt Master K4TD, equipped with a belt grinding unit and four oscillating disc brushes, has provided Wiegand with reliable results for years in grinding, deburring, and edge rounding of plasma parts. When a solution for very strong edge rounding—partially over a 2-millimeter radius—was sought years later, Wiegand again turned to Löwer. The Roto Master KR 1500, equipped with a belt grinding and a rotary brush unit, delivered the desired top-quality result and met Wiegand's demands for the cleanest surfaces and extreme radii.

High degree of automation

Early on, Wiegand focused on achieving the highest possible level of automation in manufacturing. This is reflected not only in the Loewer in-line systems but also in the use of robots in parts handling. Half a million parts of various sizes are processed annually through the Loewer systems, says Wiegand's production manager Kevin Gensler.

Automation also enables a double shift. The flexibility of Loewer systems allows for a material mix of aluminum, stainless steel, steel, and partially fiberglass-reinforced plastic.
