Over the past five years, Valmet Automotive has invested around 15 million euros in the Bad Friedrichshall location, starting with the commissioning of the High Performance Battery Test Center in 2020. The recently completed expansion has more than doubled the test bench capacity. In addition, a warehouse and logistics center has been set up.

With the expansion of the Battery Test Center, the company can now offer the following tests:

  • Performance tests, such as load cycles, customer driving profiles, energy and capacity tests, voltage cycles

  • Life testing

  • Thermal Management Tests

  • Environmental tests, such as salt spray fog test, leak testing, humid heat, chemical resistance

  • Extended tests for quality assurance of the production line in the Kirchardt battery plant

Further measures planned

With the extension of the lease contract for ten more years concluded in 2023, the foundation was laid for further measures. Valmet Automotive intends to expand service and analysis activities as well as product validation activities specifically for battery systems that are used in commercial vehicles and off-highway solutions.

In addition, investments are planned in the Weihenbronn branch, where the technology testing area is to be expanded. The company also plans to expand the safeguarding tests for product safety.

Increasing focus on own products

With the expansion of the Battery Test Center, Valmet Automotive is responding to the strategic realignment of its business division EVS. Going forward, the company is increasingly focusing on its own products for the bus & truck sector as well as agricultural machinery, for example for the agricultural industry, in mining and forestry.

As important products for serving these segments, the company introduced the Modular Power Pack to the market a little more than two years ago, and recently presented the Energy Pack concept as part of the Battery Show Europe. These differ significantly in terms of performance requirements from the automotive industry, such as in terms of power and durability under extreme weather conditions and at higher power peaks.

Thanks to the investments made, the Battery Test Center is already capable today of testing both the high performance requirements of a sports car and the harsh requirements of a tractor. (se)
