According to Donald Trump, huge amounts of money from foreign sources will flow into the US treasury through tariffs and taxes. At least that's what he said yesterday in his inaugural speech after being sworn in at the US Capitol. He will immediately begin to overhaul the trade system to protect American workers and families. The only question is from what! Trump envisioned that the American dream will soon be back and flourishing like never before. However, he did not provide any details on possible import tariffs or the countries affected for the time being.

The Trump effect, raising fears ...

Among economists and business experts worldwide, fears of US President Donald Trump's second term in office are greatest in Europe and North America. In the USA and Canada as well as in Western and Eastern Europe, the economic experts surveyed by the Munich Ifo Institute and the Swiss Institute for Economic Policy expect more negative consequences for the economy, international trade and climate policy. Among economists and business experts from other parts of the world, however, concerns about Trump are less pronounced, according to the Munich-based institute. As far as economic growth is concerned, over 80 percent of respondents in Europe expect a negative Trump effect. North American players are not far behind with over 70 percent, according to the results.

Other countries are relaxed about the new Trump era

In contrast, economists in South America, Africa and Asia (including China) believe that no major economic damage is to be feared. Opinions are also strikingly divided when it comes to international security, although concerns are not as great. In North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, a good half of economists fear negative consequences, which is a significantly higher proportion than in the rest of the world. Incidentally, 1,398 experts from 125 countries took part in the survey from December 4 to December 18, 2024.
