Donald Trump is now ranting that he will not allow the opening of a new border bridge between the US and Canada until its neighbor treats the United States with the fairness and respect it deserves. In his view, at least half of the bridge must also belong to the USA. Negotiations would begin immediately, Trump announced. However, the US President did not provide any more specific details. More precisely, it is about the bridge over the Detroit River. It connects the city of Windsor in the Canadian province of Ontario with the US city of Detroit in Michigan. The bridge is called the Gordie Howe International Bridge and has six lanes of traffic. Pedestrians and cyclists will also be able to use it. The opening is planned for this year. According to Canada, it is financing the construction costs, which will then be refinanced with tolls, as we have learned.

Canada's Rapprochement With China Annoys Trump

The long-planned bridge is actually intended to further boost trade between the neighboring countries. However, Trump accuses Canada in a post of not having used American products such as steel for the construction. In addition, the US President once again criticized the limited rapprochement with China on trade issues recently announced by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. He had therefore recently threatened the neighboring country with a 100 percent tariff on the import of goods. Punitive tariffs on the import of Canadian aircraft are also on the USA leader's mind. However, Trump sometimes only uses tariffs as a threat and ultimately does not implement them, even though he has unfortunately already carried out some of them. The US President has repeatedly fantasized about Canada being integrated into the USA as a federal state.
