There are plenty of small cars with internal combustion engines. City cars with electric drive, on the other hand, are rather rare. But automakers are catching up: Several new electric cars in compact sizes are announced by 2026.

Electric cars are usually large and expensive. Small and affordable models are only available sporadically. But that is changing: By the middle of the decade, the fleet of affordable city electric vehicles is expected to grow and become more attractive. Five examples.

Renault 5 (2024)

Renault is consistent with its design and naming strategy, looking back in time. The inspiration for its compact electric car is the Renault 5 (R5), a classic car built between 1972 and the turn of the millennium, which achieved around 5.5 million units sold due to its charming appearance and affordable technology. The electric version of this model is likely optimized for low costs, although the manufacturer has not disclosed a price yet. However, it is expected to be below the current price of the Renault Zoe. The range is estimated to be around 400 kilometers, slightly better than the Zoe.

VW ID 2 (2025)

The plan to build an electric car for the masses did not quite work out with the ID 3. The compact model found the footsteps of the Beetle and Golf to be significantly large. The ID 2, priced at under 25,000 euros, is expected to fit better into this category, especially with its consumer-friendly price. While the exterior dimensions and design resemble the VW Polo, the five-door model is expected to offer significantly more interior space than the fuel-based subcompact car. The technology used comes from the VW modular platform, allowing for ranges of up to 450 kilometers, extending beyond city limits.

Fiat Punto (2024)

Whether the small electric vehicle from the Italian Stellantis brand will actually be named Punto is still uncertain. However, it is likely to serve as a visual and price positioning reference to the classic small car. The technology for the electric vehicle will be sourced from Fiat's corporate portfolio, similar to the Opel Corsa-E and Peugeot E-208. In terms of range, it is expected to achieve values in the mid-300-kilometer range. The pricing is anticipated to be below the two higher-positioned brands within the conglomerate. Currently, an electric small car from Stellantis is priced at around 36,000 euros.

Toyota bZ Small (2025)

The Japanese automotive world market leader has catching up to do in the electric vehicle sector. Among the 15 new models announced is the bZ Small Crossover, a genuine entry-level car. The visually raised city car resembles the gasoline-powered Aygo X, but it has its own unique electric platform. Thanks to its very low consumption, the model built in Europe for Europe is expected to require a relatively small and affordable battery. Range and prices have not yet been made public.

Skoda Mini-SUV (2026)

VW's smallest ID model will not remain alone for long. Also in 2025, the Seat subsidiary Cupra could introduce a slightly sportier positioned variant, before the sister brand Skoda launches a more practical and spacious model. The small electric vehicle is expected to come in an SUV design and be slightly taller than the two sister models. When it comes to technology and prices, it is likely to follow a similar direction.
