Subaru relies on the NAS systems from the PowerScale family by Dell Technologies. This enables the company to store, manage, and provide the large volumes of data needed for the development of the driver assistance technology EyeSight. EyeSight is used in more than 5.5 million vehicles. The system monitors traffic, optimizes the operation of the cruise control, and warns the driver if they are leaving their lane. The system uses exclusively stereo cameras to implement driver assistance functions such as Adaptive Cruise Control and emergency braking system with collision warning. The emergency braking system recognizes not only cars but also motorcycles and pedestrians in the lane.

Reduce storage costs

PowerScale meets the IT requirements associated with the modeling and validation of artificial intelligence and supports companies in scaling capacities and performance effortlessly, regardless of where the data is located. With the PowerScale systems, the Subaru Lab, the AI development center of the Japanese car manufacturer that opened in 2020, can store about a thousand times as many files as before and easily access all files distributed across the PowerScale systems in the development center’s data centers and the offices in Tokyo. This was not possible before and assists the company in improving AI image analyses. The ability of PowerScale to scale flexibly and provide data for diverse use across locations opens new business opportunities for Subaru. "As a brand whose reputation is based on trust, we continuously advance AI development to increase the reliability of our vehicles and contribute to the common good," emphasizes Takashi Kanai, Deputy Chief of Subaru Lab and Manager of ADAS Development Department, PGM (Advanced Integrated System), Engineering Division. "Even though the requirements for systems and storage change repeatedly, we are convinced that PowerScale, as infrastructure for the EyeSight driver assistance technology, reliably manages all tasks, allowing us to advance our AI initiatives to improve driving safety."  (se)
