Three years after launching its first electric vehicle, the Solterra, the Japanese automaker is introducing two completely new models: the compact SUV Uncharted and the larger E-Outback. Both vehicles utilize the E-Subaru Global Platform, which is also used by Toyota under the E-TNGA name, including for the bZ4X and the Lexus RZ.

An important feature of the new architecture is an updated, software-controlled all-wheel drive. This system adjusts the torque distribution between the front and rear e-axes to improve traction and cornering stability on various surfaces.

Although Subaru is traditionally known for its boxer engines and mandatory all-wheel drive, the engineers have developed two pure front-wheel drive versions of the Uncharted. These are primarily aimed at new buyers who value high range and a more affordable entry price. According to Volker Dannath, Managing Director of Subaru Germany, pricing for the two new models has not yet been finalized but is expected to be announced later this year.

Subaru Uncharted: Three Drivetrain Options

Subaru is launching the Uncharted, its first all-electric compact SUV, in the first quarter of 2026. At launch, three drivetrain options will be available. The top model features all-wheel drive with two electric motors, delivering a system output of 252 kW. A 77-kilowatt-hour (gross) battery powers the motors and is expected to provide a range of 470 kilometers (approx. 290  miles). The all-wheel-drive model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (approx. 62 mph) in exactly five seconds and can tow up to 1,500 kilograms.

Below that, Subaru positions the front-wheel-drive variants. The Long-Range version uses the same 77-kilowatt-hour battery for an estimated range of up to 585 kilometers (approx. 360 miles). The entry-level model, equipped with a 57.7-kilowatt-hour battery, is expected to achieve a range of 445 kilometers (approx. 275 miles). All Uncharted variants come standard with a 22-kW onboard charger for alternating current (AC). Battery preconditioning is designed to enable charging from ten to 80 percent at a DC fast-charging station, even at minus ten degrees Celsius (approx. -50°F), with 150 kW in 30 minutes. With 21 centimeters (approx. 8 inches) of ground clearance and the all-wheel-drive assistance system X-Mode, the compact SUV is set to prove its adventurous capabilities off paved roads.

The recuperation intensity can be adjusted in five levels using "paddle shifters." There are two wireless charging trays for smartphones and a 14-inch infotainment display.

E-Outback as Flagship Electric Vehicle

Subaru will introduce the E-Outback as the brand's new electric flagship in Europe in the second quarter of 2026. It carries a significant legacy, as it bears the name of the crossover pioneer sold with combustion engines for three decades. The E-Outback is three centimeters shorter than its conventional namesake but has a wheelbase that is 10.5 centimeters (approx. 4 inches) longer, measuring 2.85 meters (approx. 9 ft).

A 280 kW all-wheel-drive system powers it, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (approx. 62 mph) in 4.4 seconds. Energy is supplied by a 74.7-kWh battery, allowing for ranges of over 450 kilometers (approx. 280 miles). The E-Outback also offers 21 centimeters (approx. 8 inches) of ground clearance, while the X-Mode and a towing capacity of 1,500 kilograms are designed to make the switch to electric vehicles appealing to traditional Subaru buyers.

The deliberately rugged design of the E-Outback is emphasized by a roof rail as well as 18- or 20-inch alloy wheels. Safety is ensured through, among other features, driving assistance functions derived from the well-known Eyesight system. The E-Outback will be available for pre-order from the first quarter of 2026.
