The Romanian plant Star Assembly in Sebeș has begun assembling electric drive units for the GLC model. This makes the wholly owned Mercedes subsidiary the second global location to supply the company's vehicle plants with electric drives.

The plant in the historic region of Transylvania has been assembling the nine-speed automatic transmission "9G-TRONIC" and the dual-clutch transmission "8G-DCT" for Mercedes-Benz since 2013. According to its own information, around 1,400 people work at Star Assembly today.

Sebeș Supplies Bremen and Kecskemét

According to the company, the new production volumes strengthen Sebeș's position within Mercedes' global network. While the Untertürkheim plant, as the center of excellence for drive technologies, is set to produce units for the new CLA and future top-segment models of the brand, Sebeș will focus on the GLC. Series production of the GLC will commence in 2026 at Mercedes' plant in Bremen.

Starting next year, the Romanian site will also supply the Hungarian Mercedes plant in Kecskemét with electric drives for the new C-Class, the company announced.

30,000 Square Meters for Assembly

Mercedes-Benz invested in a new hall of over 30,000 square meters, integrating assembly and logistics functions. The 3,280 feet-long assembly line includes more than 200 manual and automated processes across 15,000 square meters.

"The production of the electric drive units for the new GLC is an important milestone in the transformation of our plant," stated Jörg Burzer, Mercedes Board Member for Production. The investments increased flexibility and strengthened future viability.

Integrated into a Digital Ecosystem and CO2-Neutral

According to Mercedes, the plant is fully integrated into "MO360", the digital production ecosystem of Mercedes-Benz. This, the company states, ensures seamless traceability of every component.

The production is CO2-neutral on balance and powered by electricity from renewable sources. A photovoltaic system with up to five MW capacity is being considered. The new production hall is supplied with energy via a heat pump system.
