The VW subsidiary Skoda has opened a new assembly plant for battery systems. Battery systems for up to 335,000 vehicles per year will now roll off the assembly line in the hall at the company's headquarters in Mlada Boleslav, as the car manufacturer announced. Around 205 million euros have been invested in the expansion of battery production over an area of around 590,000 square feet. The plant makes Skoda the largest manufacturer of vehicle battery systems in the Group. The plant also uses "cell to pack" technology, in which the cells are integrated directly into the battery pack via a module without the usual intermediate step. According to Skoda, the technology is characterized by longevity, simplified production and therefore cost efficiency.

One Battery System is Ready And Installed Per Minute

The new battery systems from Mlada Boleslav will be used to supply models of several Volkswagen Group brands. The high automation rate and the use of 131 industrial robots ensure a cycle time of just 60 seconds per battery system. Skoda has been producing high-voltage battery systems since September 2019. The brand is also considered an important driving force in the recently crisis-ridden Volkswagen Group. Last year, Skoda delivered over one million vehicles (for the first time since 2019)—over 20 percent of which were electric cars or plug-in hybrids, according to reports. The car manufacturer is also planning the premiere of the new all-electric city SUV Epiq, which is to be built in Spain, and the flagship Peaq, which offers up to seven seats, this year. As is well known, there is also a new battery factory at the Seat subsidiary in Spain (with a similar capacity). However, according to VW, it will mainly supply small cars there, while the Czech Republic will take over the mid-range segment.
