The new paint shop at Skoda, whose opening is planned for 2029, will be able to paint up to 1,600 vehicles per day, it is said. Together with the existing facilities, the total daily painting capacity at the Mladá Boleslav (Czech Republic) plant will then reach 2,600 vehicles. The modern facility scores with automation, robotics, and advanced technology to improve the quality of each applied protective layer. It makes no difference whether an internal combustion engine vehicle or an electric vehicle passes through. Incidentally, it will also be able to handle two-tone paint jobs and matte finishes. It will feature a new curing oven optimized for the precise curing of paints throughout the painting process. A combined energy source, utilizing biogas and electricity, will increase flexibility, reduce emissions, and lower costs. The new paint shop will also support Skoda Auto's goal of making production in its Czech plants climate-neutral by 2030. In addition to reducing volatile organic compounds (VOC), CO2 emissions from the painting processes will also be reduced by 28 percent.

This is how the Process Works in the new Skoda Paint Shop

The new building will be 301 meters long (approx. 987 ft), 131 meters wide (approx. 429 ft), and 32.5 meters high (approx. 106 ft)—comparable to a seven-story building. The total area will cover 118,000 square meters (over 16 football fields or approx. 141126 sq yd), and the conveyor system will span 15 kilometers. The facility is being built on a site directly next to the recently opened Laurin & Klement Bridge, which is currently being used as a storage area for finished vehicles. Painting is one of the most important phases of vehicle production as it ensures long-term aesthetic quality and comprehensive protection against external influences. The surface protection of the body consists of multiple layers. First comes a cathodic corrosion protection coating, followed by PVC coatings in critical areas, then primers and base coats applied using the wet-on-wet method. For the first time, Skoda is using a process where the color-intensive base coat is applied directly to the cathodic layer without requiring the primer to be baked. This optimizes costs without compromising quality. The final clear coat and cavity spraying with protective wax complete the process, resulting in a total layer thickness of approximately 100 micrometers (0.1 millimeters).
