"We have started this collaboration project with Sony to bring the power of the industrial metaverse directly to our community of designers, engineers, and manufacturers using our flagship product development software," said Bob Haubrock, Senior Vice President, Product Engineering Software, Siemens Digital Industries Software. "Following the preview of the HMD at CES last year, our joint teams have developed a series of tools that revolutionize the use of mixed reality in the engineering field—not only to support global collaboration based on high-fidelity 3D models but also to enable co-creation directly on important 3D CAD data in a managed, secure environment."

Sony's XR HMD (SRH-S1) features high-resolution microdisplays with 4K resolution. Thanks to its rendering technology, high-resolution and realistic rendering of 3D objects in real time is possible. It also includes controllers for intuitive and precise interaction with 3D objects.

"Since announcing our collaboration with Siemens at CES 2024, we have had the opportunity to receive direct feedback from Siemens customers on the technology, and as a Siemens NX user, we were thrilled that many of them share our enthusiasm for the potential of immersive engineering," said Seiya Amatatsu, Incubation Center, XR Technology Development Division, Sony Corporation.

Mixed reality in design and manufacturing

According to Siemens, the immersive engineering toolset brings the power of mixed reality to the product development and manufacturing community. These include:

  • NX Immersive Explorer: A headset-agnostic solution that designers and engineers use to conduct informal design reviews and collaborate using 3D CAD data derived from Siemens' NX software for product development.

  • NX Immersive Designer: NX Immersive Designer has been developed from the ground up to leverage Sony's HMD and creative controllers, and it enables designers and engineers to integrate, edit, and collaborate on graphically appealing 3D product models natively in NX, without requiring additional preparation or software. With Sony's ring and pointer controllers for object interaction and precise manipulation of 3D geometries, designers and engineers can directly interact with product prototypes, NX commands, and menus. NX Immersive Designer supports augmented mixed reality environments to place virtual objects in the real world, conduct design sessions in a virtual design review room with high fidelity, and/or extend and complement the virtual design session via large-scale, high-resolution virtual monitors. For even more efficient interaction, users can utilize the NX Voice Command Assistant in the immersive environment to navigate through multiple layers of menus and clicks with simple, user-friendly spoken keywords.

  • NX Immersive Collaborator: NX Immersive Collaborator enables companies of all sizes to leverage both the benefits of joint and remote design reviews with multiple participants. NX Immersive Collaborator builds on the capabilities of NX Immersive Explorer and Designer to give companies of all sizes the opportunity to benefit from both joint and remote design reviews with multiple participants. NX Immersive Collaborator requires Siemens' cloud-enabled NX X to host design collaboration and review sessions—the participants can join via local VR or desktop view to provide comprehensive collaboration options.

NX Immersive Designer is available to all NX customers with the latest updates and via licensing from Siemens. NX Immersive Collaborator will be available later this month with the NX X update and also via value-based licensing. The NX Immersive Engineering tools have been developed to work exclusively with Sony's HMD offering, which includes 4K OLED microdisplays and dedicated controllers. The HMD with controllers is required for both NX Immersive Designer and Collaborator and costs $4,750. It can be pre-ordered now, with deliveries expected to begin in February 2025.

Siemens' immersive engineering technology helps our designers and engineers to view, construct, and edit parts more easily with the unique controllers, allows our customers to experience their car at human scale before it is built, and helps stakeholders from production to easily collaborate with designers and engineers to validate parts before manufacturing.
