Schneider Electric's Smart Factories are fully networked production environments that can self-organize and ideally function without human intervention. The company now operates 36 such factories worldwide, 22 of them in Europe.

Flexible production for a successful energy transition

In Dunavecse, solutions are manufactured individually according to the engineering-to-order (ETO) principle. This approach, where the product is planned and manufactured only after the order is received, requires highly flexible, automated production environments. The Hungarian plant produces the SF6-free medium voltage switchgear type RM Airset. This is a gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) for medium voltage secondary distribution. Thanks to a combination of synthetically pure air and shunt vacuum switching, it avoids the previously common insulating gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). This is in line with the current EU regulation on fluorinated greenhouse gases. Thanks to their sensor technology and digital connectivity, they can be easily integrated into smart grids. Thus, the IoT-capable switchgear is key technology for the construction of climate-friendly power grids.

Increasing demand for environmentally friendly network technology

By increasing the production capacity of SF6-free switchgear, the company is helping to meet the growing demand for environmentally friendly grid technology. Network operators rely on individual solutions that allow them to build resilience and flexibility into their power grids for the future. Around 90 percent of the products manufactured in Dunavecse are destined for export to the European market.

"The energy transition in Europe is making good progress and strengthening the region's energy independence," says Yann Reynaud, Senior Vice President, Global Engineering to Order Operations at Schneider Electric. "With the smart and ETO-oriented production of SF6-free medium and low voltage solutions in Dunavecse, we are meeting the growing demand and offering our customers even more innovation, sustainability and digital solutions."

Thus, the ecological footprint is reduced

The plant covers 28,000m2 and employs around 500 people. To improve energy efficiency and increase energy savings, numerous Ecostruxure solutions are used in conjunction with an intelligent building and energy management system. A large part of the energy demand is covered by photovoltaic systems on the roof and supplemented by renewable energy from the local grid. This also serves the charging stations for up to 30 electric cars and 25 electric bicycles at the site. Geothermal heat pumps provide heating and cooling, while air locks at the truck docking stations and factory entrances prevent heat loss.
