Samsung Display has announced that it will begin mass production of the world's first rollable OLED display for laptops starting in April 2025. The technology allows the display size to be expanded at the touch of a button.

Expandable screen area provides flexibility

The rollable OLED display from Samsung made its debut at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, where Lenovo unveiled the ThinkBook Plus G6 Rollable. This device is equipped with the novel screen, which allows for seamless enlargement from 14 inches in a 5:4 format to 16.7 inches in an 8:9 format. This flexibility enables the device to be used as a compact laptop or a large working tool, depending on the usage scenario.

Energy-efficient technology and market entry

Samsung is using the so-called Eco² OLED technology for the new displays. This reduces energy consumption by up to 30 percent by increasing the light transmittance of the display, thus achieving higher efficiency in brightness control. Lenovo plans to launch the ThinkBook Plus G6 Rollable in June 2025, initially likely in selected regions.

"When the rollable display expands, it can experience stress, but based on our experience in foldable mass production, we have designed our rollable products to be durable," said Youngseok Kim, Vice President and Head of Samsung Display IT Sales.

Samsung's mass production of rollable OLED screens could significantly change the competition in the display market. The technology offers manufacturers new possibilities to develop devices that are both mobile and comfortable to work with. Industry experts expect that other manufacturers will follow the example of Samsung and Lenovo and bring their own devices with similar features to the market. However, no models from other manufacturers have been announced yet. (mc)
