Adapted to the needs of customers in the industry, the Fraunhofer IPT provides "mySensor" as an initial point for needs analysis, serving as a web configurator. Interested companies and industrial partners can easily and modularly assemble their Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) using this online tool, which is accessible for free on the web, as emphasized by the Aachen-based institute. The tool also offers various customization options, allowing selection of components such as sensor type, communication technologies, and protocols.

The configuration includes choices for features like battery life, processing board type, housing characteristics, as well as IIoT technologies like cloud and edge interfaces, making it effortless to create a suitable and individual sensor concept. Additionally, other innovative communication technologies like Wi-Fi 6E or 5G can be configured, note the scientists.

Flexible configurator because every application is different

Every digitization project begins with data acquisition and analysis of requirements, according to the IPT. A professional IIoT sensor system forms the technical basis for this. However, the requirements for data acquisition can vary significantly from application to application. For instance, the detection of tool wear may involve measurements with vibration sensors, and the data is transmitted using 5G mobile technology. On the other hand, simple temperature measurements can contribute to optimizing the quantities of cutting fluid used in grinding systems.
Therefore, data acquisition focuses on real-time capability, key performance indicators of the application, expectations regarding sensor battery life, and even edge computing, depending on the application. Adequate monitoring allows keeping track of requirements and results.

The benefits of individually selected sensors include significant increases in the uptime of manufacturing systems such as milling machines, presses, or grinding machines. Quality standards could also be more easily maintained. With appropriate sensor monitoring, various improvement potentials can be identified, and applications can be executed decentrally.

The system configured with "mySensor" then serves as the basis for entering the concrete planning of an industrial digitization project. With experience from numerous 5G networking projects, the scientists at Fraunhofer IPT design the appropriate sensor technology on request. The offer ranges from the application analysis concept to development and validation.

The configurator can be reached here.
