The recently introduced "Agility" coordinate measuring machines from Renishaw work with highly accurate, dynamically measuring 5-axis measuring heads "Revo-2". With this, M&H CNC-Technik GmbH, a specialist for additively manufactured components in Ilz/Austria, has extensively optimized its quality assurance.

Equipped with 5-axis metrology and the ability for synchronized movements, the "Revo-2" measuring head minimizes dynamic measurement errors even at high scanning speeds. This allows for highly accurate and efficient measurements.

Demanding Components

The uniqueness of the probe lies in its ability to perform complex and fast movements while the coordinate measuring machine itself moves linearly, slowly, and with extreme precision. This unique combination provides an accuracy that was previously considered unattainable. Paired with an innovative coordinate measuring machine "Agility" from Renishaw, M&H CNC-Technik GmbH in Ilz, Austria benefits from it. The company is internationally recognized as one of the most innovative specialists in industrial additive manufacturing and high-end manufacturing. It specializes in machining complex components to the highest accuracy. A particular focus is on printing components based on the high-strength nickel superalloy Inconel 718. Components made from this material are used in space technology, Formula 1 race cars, and hypercars. Materials such as titanium or Scalmalloy are also used for 3D printing at M&H.

With a "Agility" coordinate measuring machine from Renishaw, the 3D printing specialist has now also commissioned one of the most powerful measurement systems in Europe. Managing Director Patrick Herzig explains his concept in quality assurance: "With the multitude of complex, freeform components without classical regular geometries, conventional 3-axis measuring devices quickly reach their limits. The new technology allows even the most complex geometries to be captured efficiently and precisely—and with surprisingly simple programming."

Herwig Jachym, programmer and operator of the "Agility" coordinate measuring machine, agrees: "The Agility impresses with its exceptional flexibility. The 5-axis measurement head, in particular, proves to be a true asset in daily use. The measurement efforts are significantly reduced, and thanks to the excellent accessibility, a wide variety of component geometries can be captured with just a few probe tips. Especially given the multitude and variability of our parts, this is an enormous advantage." Patrick Herzig adds: "With conventional measurement systems, implementing this form would be difficult—the effort for additional accessories alone would be considerable. With the Agility, around 98 percent of our components can be measured with just three probe configurations. For me, this is a sensible step forward in the development of metrology."

Measure Quickly in Five Axes

Herwig Jachym says: "The Agility impresses with its high measurement speed—smaller components are fully measured in about five minutes, larger ones in about an hour. Compared to conventional 3-axis technology, this means a significant time saving, sometimes by a factor of three. To achieve the same throughput, multiple machines and operators would be required with conventional systems. After a year in use, it can be noted that many measurement tasks would only be feasible with traditional systems at considerable additional effort, numerous special probes, and correspondingly high costs."

Patrick Herzig further explains: "The Agility is characterized not only by precision and speed but also by low ongoing investment costs. From the start, we have primarily worked with standard probes—only a few disc probes were used additionally. Particularly relevant is the ability to perform roughness measurements directly on the system. This enables measurements in hard-to-reach areas that would scarcely or not at all be accessible with conventional roughness measuring devices. Comprehensive and high-quality measurement reports also generate great interest from customers."

Flexible, Efficient, and Reliable

The three major advantages of speed, accessibility, and flexibility have convinced the experts at the manufacturing company in Austria. Herwig Jachym explains: "Even measuring a single borehole shows the potential of the 5-axis measurement head. By reducing movements of the linear axes, significantly less mass is moved—this saves not only time but also energy. Capturing a cylinder with 400 measurement points in just 45 seconds illustrates the capability. The high point density provides an extensive data basis that enables precise conclusions about form and position tolerances. This ensures a significantly noticeable security in quality assessment."

Useful for Larger Series

Patrick Herzig further explains: "Especially in the high-precision sector where M&H operates, the traceability of accuracy plays a central role in customer dialogue. The 'Agility' coordinate measuring machine makes a decisive contribution here—it supports not only quality assurance but also the acquisition of new projects. In the meantime, not only prototypes but also series parts can be reliably produced and documented. The ability to comprehensively support series production metrologically was crucial for winning some projects. Additionally, customers regularly visit the company and show particular interest in the Agility—it symbolizes the technological ambition of the manufacturing and has clearly enhanced it."

Invest in Further Innovation

M&H CNC-Technik GmbH plans targeted expansion in the future as well. Managing Director Patrick Herzig explains: "We are currently experiencing very dynamic growth—that's why we consistently invest in new technologies." The company is also tapping into new business areas. According to Patrick Herzig, there are exciting prospects, especially in motorsport, the hypercar segment, and medical technology. With this clear growth trajectory and a consistent technological focus, the Styrian company solidifies its role as a pioneer in industrial 3D printing—specifically emphasizing precision, development, and sustainable expansion.
