The sustainability of products is playing an increasingly important role in development. Not only because of the costs, but also for a good external image of the company.

The company Cadfem Germany has developed a new simulation software that can simplify material selection in product development. According to a statement, the focus is particularly on the sustainability of the various materials.

"Development departments must consider not only energy and water consumption, but also the recyclability of materials, processing methods and logistics, which can become very complex," says Matthias Hörmann, a member of the Cadfem management board. The tools of the Ansys Granta Material Intelligence (MI)TM simulation platform would provide the reference data required for this. The standard package includes more than 4,000 materials with respective physical properties, processing and ecological evaluation. With the help of various filters, alternative materials that have a similar rigidity to the original material and are significantly better in terms of sustainability can be identified in the design of products and components, for example in the areas of drive technology or mechanical engineering. The models can then be tested in virtual tests.

The goal is to manage all of a company's material knowledge with the platform and provide all the necessary tools for this. It connects with the CAD, CAE or ERP systems already in place in companies and links all existing material data from material testing to purchasing.
