Connectors Molex combines power and signal with fast data transmission for new vehicle architectures

From Stefanie Eckardt | Translated by AI 2 min Reading Time

Molex has introduced the hybrid connector series MX-Dash, which combines power/signal and fast data transmission. With this new wire-to-wire and wire-to-board connector family, the manufacturer responds to the increased demand for in-cable and zone architecture applications. Areas of application include modules for automated driving, camera, GPS, infotainment, and lidar systems, displays, or even the connection of sensor devices.

For high reliability, the MX-DaSH connectors feature a novel stabilization of the plug tongues and independent secondary locks for a robust and reliable connection of the terminals. This allows for a mix of devices and sensors with different network requirements to be accommodated, which is increasingly demanded. In the wire-to-board version, Molex offers modular sections or inserts that support various interfaces without changing form factors or footprints.

The component family is available in sealed and unsealed versions to optimize future vehicle architectures with different environmental and design requirements. Various configurations support different power and signal connection sizes such as 0.5; 0.64; 1.2; 1.5; 2.8 or 4.8 mm as well as high-speed FAKRA mini/HFM® modules for fast data transmission.

Reduce complexity

Vehicle manufacturers and automotive suppliers can better meet the growing demands for more compact, hybrid connection systems for numerous automotive applications with the MX-DaSH connectors, according to the manufacturer. Depending on the vehicle model, it is now possible to reduce the number of inline wire-to-board connectors for a dashboard and body control harness from eight to two while saving up to 6 m of copper cable at the same time.

The various versions of the components cover different wire-to-wire applications. The 31+1-way connector system, for example, combines 31 power and ground circuits as well as a fast data connection to reduce space requirements by up to 30 percent. Because each MX-DaSH connector has more functions integrated, considerable time can be saved through optimized harness installation. In addition, the product family was designed for automated harness assembly, which minimizes cycle times and optimizes the efficiency and quality of the entire manufacturing process.

Availability

Molex has validated its MX-DaSH connectors according to global industry standards, including USCAR, Peugeot, and IEC. Wire-to-wire models are available as well as selected wire-to-board variants and custom configurations. Molex plans to continuously expand its series so that the manufacturer's customers can keep pace with the evolving requirements in the automotive sector.
