Telerob Gesellschaft für Fernhantierungstechnik mbH was founded in 1994 and has established itself as a leading manufacturer of solutions for unmanned ground vehicles. The product range of the Baden-Württemberg-based (Germany) company includes unmanned ground vehicles as well as operational vehicles that are individually configured according to customer requirements.

Telerob's solutions safely and effectively carry out a variety of dangerous missions, such as Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), Hazardous Materials Handling (Hazmat), and the exploration of Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear threats (CBRN). The robust ground vehicles are all-terrain capable and equipped with specialized precision manipulators, autonomy functions, and intuitive operation, making them extremely versatile.

The robots are used to protect human lives and to replace personnel with robots whenever deployment is too dangerous for humans. Telerob robots are now in operation in over 45 countries with police and military units, as well as in industry and research.

ILM Motors Excel With High Power Density And Torque

The collaboration between Telerob and TQ dates back many years and began at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The origin of Robo Drive technology lies in the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics at DLR. There, researchers succeeded in developing a new motor technology: a servo motor with the highest power density and torque relative to weight and size. This technology was then spun off and industrialized by TQ-Robo Drive.

The Robo Drive motors from TQ offer a high torque density, highlights Tobias Waibel, Product Manager at Telerob, as the most important feature of the motors. "This makes our EOD robots especially powerful and compact." Due to the excellent lift-to-weight ratio, the precision manipulators equipped with the frameless motors can move heavy loads. Additionally, the high efficiency extends battery life and enables longer operations. Thanks to precise motion control, sensitive tasks can be performed safely. Moreover, the motors are robust and function flawlessly even in extreme, harsh environments. "This makes them ideal for demanding EOD missions," explains Waibel.

The so-called inrunner motors (ILM) from TQ, installed in the joints of the EOD robots, offer additional advantages for robot developers: in addition to the high torque density, they provide detailed characteristic curves and parameters. "This simplifies application design," says Waibel. "Furthermore, the high efficiency—thanks to very low power loss—not only extends battery life but also minimizes heat generation." Another decisive factor for Telerob is the wide range of available motor sizes and configurations, which allow for adaptation to various applications and installation requirements.

Telerob, which was acquired in 2021 by AeroVironment, one of the world's leading providers of unmanned aerial systems, has seen strong demand for the Telemax EVO series robotic vehicles equipped with TQ motors. "The bestseller in our portfolio is the EVO Hybrid. It is now the most sold EOD robot worldwide," Tobias Waibel reports with satisfaction.

Plans for the future collaboration between Telerob and TQ are already in place, and the high technical expertise, which Waibel particularly values in the TQ team, opens up possibilities for new, extraordinary, and highly demanding applications that serve to protect human lives. He recommends TQ-Robo-Drive to robotics manufacturers and companies "that rely on precise, efficient, and compact drives."
