At the end of a weak year, things are going better for Mercedes-Benz in China again. The core problem remains the transition from combustion engines to electric drive.

The car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz sold fewer vehicles last year compared to the previous year. In the fourth quarter, the decline was slightly mitigated thanks to a slight recovery in China. However, for the entire year, the group recorded a decline of four percent with just under 2.4 million cars and vans sold, as Mercedes-Benz announced in Stuttgart (Germany) on Friday.

In China, sales of the passenger car division Mercedes-Benz Cars fell by seven percent for the entire year, although the company sold three percent more cars in the fourth quarter than in the same period the previous year.

For the major German car manufacturers, China is the most important sales market. They now face strong competition from domestic manufacturers, who are surpassing them in the electric car sector. The sales of battery-powered cars have grown immensely in the country.

Mercedes-Benz Cars, on the other hand, sold almost a quarter fewer electric cars last year compared to the previous year. Sales fell by 23 percent—and in the fourth quarter by 26 percent.
