January:

At the beginning of the year, the car manufacturer Stellantis announced that it will close its traditional Fiat plant in Bielsko Biala (Poland) at the end of the year. The plant produces the 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel engine, which is used in various Fiat models. A total of 486 employees are affected, as the chairwoman of the Solidarnosc union Wanda Struzyk told the Italian news agency Ansa. However, there is still hope: some of the employees might be able to find work in other Polish plants of Stellantis.

The overall works council of the automotive supplier ZF warned at the beginning of the year of an imminent job cut. At least 12,000 jobs in Germany are at risk. The company based in Friedrichshafen did not want to comment on the number. However, the concerns expressed by the employees can be understood.

In June, the company then reached an agreement with the works council. While this excludes operational redundancies in areas such as research, development and head office until June 2028, it only extends to 4,900 employees. There is currently no job security for production workers.

As early as December 2023, the automotive supplier Bosch announced a major reduction in jobs in its drivetrain division. Around 1,500 jobs were to be cut. In January, the company announced the next downsizing plan, this time for the vehicle electronics and software sector. By the end of 2026, another 1,200 jobs are affected, of which around 950 are in Germany. According to a spokeswoman, the sector is facing significantly greater challenges than expected.
